SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  VINDICTIVE – obsessed with revenge; spiteful.  
Even
people who are not vindictive by nature can become bent on revenge when 
a
family member is seriously hurt by someone else.

PRESENTATIONS IN THE COLLEGE CENTER
TODAY - Seniors:  Come get your questions on financial aid answered:
Friday, January 14 at lunch in the College/Career Center.  A
representative of the California State Education Fund will be here to 
help
you.

TODAY - Friday, January 14, 2:20 p.m. - Presentations on Canadian 
colleges
and universities.  Many of these colleges are still accepting
applications.  Come find out about these excellent, low cost schools.

SENIOR SECTION.
TODAY - The application deadline for San Francisco State is January 
14th.
If you’re interested in the school, but haven’t applied yet, TODAY is 
the
deadline.

January 18 (new date due to holiday) - deadline to turn in Midyear 
School
Report Forms to the Registrar in D173 or the College Center.  This is
required for most schools that requested a counselor recommendation.  It
is not required for the UC's and most Cal State campuses.  Paperclip a
regular business-sized envelope (addressed to the college, return 
address
Berkeley High, 1980 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA 94704) with one stamp on 
it
to the college Mid-Year Report form and a Transcript Request form.  
Write
"Midyear Report" on the top of each Transcript Request Form.

Cal Grant GPA Information Release Forms are now available in the College
Center and the Registrar’s office.  It takes only a few minutes to fill
out.  This form, along with the FAFSA, determines your eligibility for a
Cal Grant.

SATURDAY - ARTISTS – National Portfolio Day, Saturday, January 15 at the
California College of the Arts, 1111 Eighth Street, San Francisco.  
Tours
and financial aid workshops – 10:00 a.m. to noon; Portfolio reviews – 
noon
to 4:00 p.m.  This is your chance to have your portfolio reviewed by an
expert.  Representatives of over 30 leading colleges of art and design

SCHOLARSHIPS
Below is a sample of the many scholarships available in the 
College/Career
Center.  Come by to get the complete list.

Sam Walton Community Scholarship – Senior with a minimum 2.5 GPA who has
taken either the SAT or the ACT and can prove financial need.

]www.walmartfoundation.org.  $1,000.  Deadline:  February 1.

California State PTA Scholarship – Senior who is a member of the 
Berkeley
High PTSA and has participated in volunteer service.  Application
available in the College Center.  $500 scholarship.  Deadline:  
February 1.

Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards – Apply online at [
http://www.hispanicheritageawards.org ]www.hispanicheritageawards.org or
pick up an application at a participating Subway.  Printed out
applications from the website will NOT be accepted.  There are 6
categories including academic excellence, community service, 
engineering &
mathematics, healthcare, journalism, and sports.  Students must
demonstrate an interest in their category, academic excellence and a
commitment to community service and write an essay on the influence of
their Hispanic heritage in their lives.  Scholarships range from $2,000 
to
$8,000.  Deadline:  February 11 (received deadline)

Bay Area Professionals in Relocation Management – Senior with a minimum
unweighted GPA of 2.5, minimum SAT of 1000, US citizen who relocated to
one of the six Bay Area counties in the last 5 years.  Application

]www.scholarshipprograms.org.  $1,000.  Deadline:  February 15.

Lewis H. Latimer Scholarship – Black senior with a minimum of 2.5 GPA.
Essay and letter of recommendation also required. Applications available
in the College Center. $500 minimum.  Deadline:  March 4.

Services
include help with college applications, SAT prep and financial aid

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
  California State Summer School for Mathematics & Science (COSMOS) 
offers
four week residential summer programs at UC Davis, Irvine, Santa Cruz 
and
San Diego for high school students (grades 9-12) who excel in math and
science.  Financial aid is available.  For more specific information on

Applications and financial aid forms will be available on the web site 
by
January 18th.

  ECI, a non-profit organization, offers high school students a choice of
six summer programs in Spain and four in France, most with the option to
earn university credit. Participants take classes at a leading language
school, live with host families or in a dormitory setting, and immerse
themselves in the culture and conversation. Sessions range from three to
four weeks in length and include a variety of interesting activities and
excursions. Come to an informational meeting at Berkeley High on
Wednesday, January 19th in room C-125. The France meeting will be at
7:00pm, and the Spain meeting will be at 8:00pm.

Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program (NASA SHARP) is
designed for students who are U.S. citizens, 16 years and older, who 
have
demonstrated a strong interest in and aptitude for science, technology,
engineering or mathematics (STEM). One of NASA SHARP's objectives is to
encourage the career paths of pre-college students who have been
traditionally underrepresented in these fields.~ They pay for round trip
transportation, room and board for the 6 weeks (June 20-August 12), and
pay a stipend.~ For more information, go to http://nasasharp.com.

Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) sponsors the 
Summer
for Sickle Cell Science Program which offers a full-time, hands-on
experience in a research laboratory environment.  Each student will work
with a faculty mentor in his or her laboratory.  Applicants must be
current juniors or seniors with a 3.0 average or better and an interest 
in
science.  Applications are available in the College Center. An essay and
letters of recommendation are required.  Deadline:  February 15.

BLACK COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES SPRING COLLEGE TOUR – March 27-April 1.
Includes Howard, Morgan State, Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia State, North
