Administration

1.	LATE START TODAY.  Students start school at 10:00 a.m!. There will 
be no breakfast served tomorrow!

2.	Artists- National Portfolio Day, Saturday, January 15 at the 
California College of the Arts, 1111 Eighth Street, San Francisco.  
Tours and financial aid workshops- 10:00 am to noon; Portfolio reviews- 
noon to 4:00 p.m.  This is your chance to have your portfolio reviewed 
by an expert. Representatives of over 30 leading colleges of art and

3.	Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program (NASA SHARP) is 
designed for students who are US Citizens, 16 years and older, who have 
demonstrated a strong interest in and aptitude for science, technology, 
engineering or mathematics (STEM).  One of NASA SHARP”s objectives is 
to encourage the career paths of pre-college students who have been 
traditionally underrepresented in these fields.  They pay for round 
trip transportation, room and board for the 6 weeks, and pay a stipend.

5.	There are two upcoming math competitions in February: The American 
Math Competition will take place on Wednesday, February 16. The Bay 
Area Math Olympiad will take place on Tuesday, February 22.  Everyone 
is welcome to take part in either competition.  Students interested in 
taking part in one or both of these competitions should attend an 
organizational meeting in Mr. Palen’s room, room H306, this Thursday, 
January 13th at lunchtime.

6.	Join the Teens Teaching Tobacco Prevention Program.  Teach younger 
students and have a positive impact on their lives while earning money 
or volunteers hours and gaining great experience.  Come to an 
informational meeting during lunch today in room G207.  Bring your 
lunch and we’ll provide snacks.  For more information contact Tricia at 
644-8987, room G202.  Space is limited!

Clubs
1.	Jewish?  Why wait?  Come join the BHS Jewish Student Union. Our next 
meeting will be on Thursday, January 13th at lunch in G212.

2.	Attention Students and Staff: who are interested in responding to 
Tsunami Disaster.  A club has been formed to coordinate the efforts of 
BHS students and staff to provide relief to this tragic international 
event.
Please bring all of your ideas and projects to this meeting in order to 
have a unified BHS impact. Meeting will be today in G210.

3.	Attention Black Student Union members! We are taking our yearbook 
photos today at lunch in H214.  Also, all seniors need to remember 
their 25 dollars for Black graduation.  That will pay for your sash, 
certificate and color program.  Please if you want to participate in 
Black Grad come to this meeting!  Don’t miss it!

4.	Quiz Bowl meeting today at lunch in room C316.

Sports
1.	All students interested in participating in Track and Field this 
spring must come to an informational meeting today: 1/12/05 from 3:30 – 
4:30 p.m.

2.	Attention all girls interested in BHS Lacrosse:  There is a 
mandatory meeting on Friday, January 14th at lunch on the East 
Bleachers.

3.	SPRING SPORTS begin February 7th.  If you intend to tryout for 
Badminton, Baseball, Crew, Softball, Swimming/ Diving, Boys Tennis, 
Boys Volleyball, Boys Golf, Girls or Boys Lacrosse, or Track and Field, 
you
must have a complete athletic packet, including a recent physical. 
Packets are available in the front office or in the Athletic office.  
If you played a Fall or Winter sport, your packet is on file in the 
Athletic office.  Turn in all packets to your coach on the first day of 
practice.

4.	Boys interested in Tennis should complete an athletic packet before 
the Feb. 7th tryout.  Coach Alex Kopel will have an informational 
meeting in the East Bleachers on Friday, February 4th at 3:30 pm.  
Tryouts begin Monday, February 7th at King Jr High at 4:00 p.m.

5.	Boys interested in playing Volleyball should come to an 
informational meeting with Coach Magan Prieto in the Athletic Office 
TODAY at 3:30 pm.

Senior Section
1.	Seniors: Come get your questions on financial aid answered: This 
Friday, January 14 at lunch in the College/Career Center.  A 
representative of the California State Education Fund will be here to 
help
you.

2.	The application deadline for San Francisco State is January 14th.  
If you’re interested in the school, but haven’t applied yet, next 
Friday is the deadline.

3.	There are many scholarship applications in the College Center.  Come 
by to check them out and get free money for college.  Some sample 
scholarships include:  Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards- apply online at 
<www.hispanicheritage awards.org> or pick up an application at a 
participating Subway.  Printed out applications from the website will 
NOT be accepted.  There are six categories.  You must write an essay on 
the influence of their Hispanic heritage in their lives. Deadline: 
February 11th.  Scholarships range from $2,000 to $8,000.

4.	Sam Walton Community Scholarship ($1,000) – Senior with a minimum 
2.5 GPA who has taken either the SAT or the ACT and can prove financial 
need. Applications available at <www.walmartfoundation.org>.  Deadline 
is February 1st.

5.	Juniors – College Works provides free college counseling for LGBTQ 
youth.  Services include help with college applications, SAT prep and 
financial aid applications.  Contact Denny David, Education Services 
Coordinator, by Friday, January 14th at 415-703-6150 ext. 28 or 
<denny at lyric.org>.

6.	January 17 –deadline to turn in Midyear School Report Forms to the 
College Center.  This is required for most schools that requested a 
counselor recommendation.  It is not required for the UC’s and most Cal
campuses.  Paperclip a regular business-sized envelope with one stamp 
on it to the college Mid-Year Report form and a transcript request 
form. Write “Midyear report” on the top of each Transcript Request 
Form.


Events/ Performance
1.	St. Luke Missionary Church invites you to a Youth Gospel Musical. 
Friday, January 14th at 7:00 pm at 165 South 7th St , Richmond, CA 
94801.

2.	Dance Production 2005 is here at last!  Did you know that the guy 
sitting next to you in Physics can tap dance? Have you seen the Hip-Hop 
moves of that gal in your 1st period class?  Come see the grooves and
moves of the finest dancers at BHS.  Dance Production is this weekend 
and next, Fridays and Saturdays, January 7,8,14, and 15th in the Little 
Theater.  8pm.  $5 students/ $10 general.  Come early get a good seat.
These shows will sell out.  Be prepared to be inspired.

3.	Black and White (semi-sormal) WINTER BALL on January 28th at Zazoo’s 
Restaurant (15 Embarcadero West, Oakland).  Winter Ball tickets are on 
sale for $30 at lunch in the Community Theater steps.  Prices will go 
up so buy your tickets now.

Sales
1.	Yearbooks are on sale for $65.00.  Every Tuesdays and Thursdays 
during lunch or zero period to purchase your book.
