SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  CONTRACT ­ to shorten or shrink.  Although water
expands when frozen, most other materials contract.

SENIOR SECTION

UPCOMING COLLEGE VISITS -- SIGN UP IN THE COLLEGE CENTER

TODAY - TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16
1:20 p.m   UC Irvine

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23
8:30 a.m.  Olin School of Engineering (MA) ­ Offers free tuition to all
students

REMINDERS 
1. Don¹t forget to send your official SAT I, SAT II, and ACT scores to each
college you are applying to.  Send SAT scores through www.collegeboard.com
and ACT scores through www.act.org.  Do this soon as it takes 3 to 6 weeks
for the scores to get to the colleges.

2.   If you are applying to a private school and have not turned in your
Secondary School Report Forms (sometimes called Counselor Recommendation
Forms included with each college¹s application), transcript request forms
and envelopes, please turn them in immediately to D221.

LAST UC/CSU Application Workshops - Wednesday, November 17, 3:30 p.m.
in the library computer lab. You must sign up in advance in D221 as there
are a limited number of computers available.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES:  Thursday, November 18 is the late registration deadline
for the December 11 ACT test.  These are the last recommended tests for the
UC¹s and Cal States.  December 20 is the regular registration deadline for
the January 22 SAT test.  This is the last time that the old SAT will be
given.  

FOR JUNIORS
UPCOMING WORKSHOPS 
Tuesday, November 16, 7:00 p.m.  How the New SAT is Changing.  Barnes &
Noble, 2352 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley.  Speaker:  Tara Anderson of Kaplan Test
Prep.  

Saturday, December 11th from 10 am to 2 pm.  Free SAT 2005 Practice Test at
Berkeley Kaplan Center (150 Berkeley Square). Participants receive a
comprehensive score report that includes a detailed analysis of their areas
of strength and weakness on the test.
 
Tuesday, December 7th from 7 to 8:15 pm.  New SAT Essay Workshop at Berkeley
Kaplan Center (150 Berkeley Square). This workshop gives students the
experience of writing a 25-minute essay under timed conditions, teaches them
exactly what the essay readers will be looking for, and introduces them to
some effective strategies for writing the SAT essay. Parents are encouraged
to sit in on the informational session that follows the timed essay
simulation.  

SCHOLARSHIPS
Don H. Splawn Scholarship ­ open to financially disadvantaged seniors who
demonstrate significant dedication to their school, family and community for
use at an educational or vocational institution.  $1,000 scholarship.
Deadline: November 22.  Applications available in the College/Career Center.

Gates Millennium Scholarship ­ This scholarship covers the cost of
attendance of an undergraduate education.  Students are eligible if they are
African American, American Indian, Asian Pacific Islander American or
Hispanic American, are a citizen or permanent resident, have a GPA of 3.3 or
above, have demonstrated leadership abilities and are low income.
Applications are available in the College Center or at www.gmsp.org.
Deadline: January 14, 2005.

VOLUNTEER AWARD
Soroptimist International of Oakland ­ Up to $1,000 award to a young woman
between the ages of 14-17 who makes the world a better place through
volunteering.  Applications available in the College/Career Center.
Deadline:  December 1.

REPEAT SECTION
FINANCIAL AID ­ For a free CD on "A Parent¹s Guide to Paying for College
2005-2006" go to www.chelastudentloans.org/cd or call 866-772-4352
(866-77-CHELA).  The CD includes information on filling out the FAFSA and
finding scholarships.

ONLINE HELP WITH YOUR UC PERSONAL STATEMENT ­ www.ucgateways.org.  Click on
"Apply to College" and then click on "Personal Statement."

CSU SAT CODE ­ If you are applying to any Cal State campuses, there is no
need to send your SAT scores to each one.  Instead, use the code 3594
(CSUMentor) and your scores will go to all of the CSU campuses.

APPLY TO 33 HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES with the Black College Common
Application.  www.eduinconline.com.

ESSAY READERS ­ Essay readers will be here every day this week at 8:00 a.m.
(except Monday), lunch and after school.
