Subject: ETREE: BHS and parking in the surrounding neighborhood

ATTENTION STUDENTS, PARENTS AND GUARDIANS

BHS and parking in the surrounding neighborhoods on the first day of the
month and of school, Wednesday, Sept 1st:

Student who drive to BHS and park below MLK (west; towards the Bay) should
be very alert Wednesday, Sept 1st. The first four days of each new month
(Mon, Tues, Wed and Thursday) are "street-sweeping" days on one side of
the street from 8 to Noon! Look at the street signs before you park.

When parking below MLK - streets going north to south, such as McKinley
Ave, Grant St, Roosevelt Ave, McGee Ave, Jefferson Ave, California St,
Spaulding Ave, & Sacramento St; and streets going east to west, such as
Addison, Allston Way, Bancroft Way, Durant Ave, Channing Way, Haste St,
etc) - look at the street signs before you park.

If the sign states "Street Sweeping" the first Wednesday of the month,
which again is the first day of school, September 1st, don't park on that
side of the street.

September 2nd, Thursday...is the first Thursday of the month; look at the
street signs before you park.

September 6th, Monday...is the first Monday of the month; look at the
street signs before you park.

September 7th, Tuesday...is the first Tuesday of the month; look at the
street signs before you park.

Also, many of the streets nearer to MLK are "sticker parking" zones. One
has to park down by Jefferson Ave and California St to be parked out of
the sticker zones. Still, however, street sweeping parking regulations
apply no matter what street one parks.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Additionally, the corner of MLK and Allston Way (one corner of the
downtown, central park) is a heavy traffic area. It might be best to
consider dropping off your BHS students, if driving, at a corner other
than MLK and Allston Way. If you drive south on MLK from University Ave
to Allston Way, attempting to make a left onto Allston (to drive up along
the BHS Community Theater side), it's going to be full of traffic.
Reconsider another approach and drop off spot. Kids can always be dropped
on on Center St (another side of the downtown park). Students could then
simply walk through the park to BHS.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Berkeley Police Dept has been covering MLK between Allston Way and
Ashby Ave, catching and citing drivers for speeding heading southbound on
MLK towards the Ashby BART station.

Numerous morning drivers heading southbound on MLK towards the Ashby BART
station and Alcatraz Ave, etc, have been getting numerous speeding
tickets. After dropping off your students, watch your speed when pulling
away from BHS.
