Youth Create Television for Berkeley Cable this Summer

BERKELEY, CA – June 14, 2004 – Do you know what your kids interests are?
Berkeley Community Media, the local public access station for the city
of
Berkeley, can not only help you find out, but also teach kids how to
express their interests on television.

“Most entertainment and educational programming for children is produced
by adults. Now, we can reverse the roles and teach children how to
express
themselves using television as an educational tool,” said Crescent
Diamond, Programming Coordinator and instructor at BCM.

With that thought in mind, the Berkeley Youth TV Camp was born. It is a
two-week program that will teach you how to create your own television
show, from beginning to end. Shows will be aired on cable TV in Berkeley
on B-TV Channel 28 and Channel 33. Youth participants will get
experience
working in every crew position in the television studio at Berkeley
Community Media including directing, hosting, camera, audio, switching,
graphics, interviewing and writing a television show.

Make a show that you’d like to watch. By the end of two weeks, youth
aged
14 through 20 years old, will be certified in studio production at BCM
and
can continue to create their own shows for free. Participants will also
receive a free membership to BCM and be eligible to take other classes
throughout the year.

The camp has two possible sessions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
from 1-4 pm. The first session runs between July 13-22 and the second
session runs July 22 through August 5. All sessions will take place at
Berkeley Community Media’s center in Berkeley High School’s G building
at
2239 Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Berkeley. The price for the camp is
$130 and partial scholarships are available.

Berkeley Community Media is a non-profit Public, Educational, and
Government (PEG) access television station with video production and
cablecast facilities for community members. BCM’s mission is to create
an
electronic free speech forum in order to encourage democratic
involvement
and build community.
