SAT WORD OF THE DAY:      TIRADE - a harsh, ranting speech directed against
someone.  As a result of the teenager's tirade against his parents, he was
grounded for a week.

SENIORS 
All colleges require a copy of your final transcript.  If you have not yet
done so, you must fill out a Transcript Request Form, write "FINAL
TRANSCRIPT" across the top, and paper clip to it a white stamped business
sized envelope addressed to the college with Berkeley High School as the
return address.  Turn this in to Ms. Mellion in D173.

JUNIORS
*Amtrak is offering a discount to high school juniors and seniors and their
parents/guardians who are visiting colleges.  Buy one ticket, get one free.
Additional children travel for half off.  Tickets must be booked 7 days in
advance.  Go to www.campusvisit.com/amtrak and fill out a short form.  Then
hit SUBMIT to obtain a special promotion code.  You can book your ticket
online or over the phone.  Call 1-800-872-7245.

Pick up the Junior Summer To Do List in the College/Career Center before the
end of school.  It contains helpful hints and useful web sites so that you
can work on college applications and deciding where to apply over the
summer.  If you are planning to apply to any private colleges, also pick up
the Senior Profile so that you can complete it over the summer.  The Senior
Profile is not needed if you are only applying to UC's, Cal States or
Community Colleges.

TESTING - DEADLINES AND PREPARATION
*ACT - if you are planning to take the September 25th ACT test, you will
need to register online at www.act.org.  The regular registration deadline
is August 20th.

FREE SUMMER TEST PREP FOR JUNIORS - People's Test Preparation Service.  June
28-August 11.  Monday/Tuesday 5-7 p.m., Wednesday 5-8:30 p.m. at 223
Dwinelle Hall, UC Berkeley.  Call (510) 642-4951 and leave a message
including your name, grade, high school, phone number and session
preference.  Or e-mail summerptps at yahoo.com.  Register early to ensure your
space in the class.

FREE WORKSHOPS - Princeton Review is sponsoring a free workshop on college
admission and some test prep. Roadmap To College Day 2004 on Saturday August
14, 9 am - 1:30 pm at Cal State Hayward.  Sessions include: Writing
Application Essays, UC Admissions, Visiting College Campuses, Financial Aid
and much more.  You must register to attend at

free SAT Strategy Sessions and Practice Tests throughout the summer visit

locations.



SCHOLARSHIPS
Chela Scholarship - Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
who will be enrolled in a two or four year California college at least
half-time in the academic year 2004-2005.  Students must have at least a 2.0
gpa.  Apply at www.chelastudentloans.org/helpcal.  Deadline:  June 30th.

WB20 Scholarship - Candidates must be African American, Asian/Pacific
Islander or American Indian, and enrolled in a four year college or
university full-time with a major in film arts, TV and/or telecommunications
in Fall 2004.  Applications available in D-221 or at www.wb20.com.
Deadline:  September 1.

UC Berkeley Men's Undergraduate Scholarship - one scholarship of $1,000; two
of $500 and two for $250.  Based on achievements, academic and
extracurricular activities, promotion of friendship, development of
character, diffusion of liberal culture and advancement of justice.
Applications in the College/Career Center and at www.ducalifornia.org.
Deadline:  July 10th.

San Jose State Men's Undergraduate Scholarship - one scholarship of $500.
Based on achievements, academic and extracurricular activities, promotion of
friendship, development of character, diffusion of liberal culture and
advancement of justice.  Applications available in the College/Career Center
and at www.sanjosedu.com.  Deadline:  July 15.
  
SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
 
*California College of the Arts still has openings in its summer program in
Creative Writing and Fashion Design, Drawing/Painting-Sculpture,
Printmaking/Drawing, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Jewelry/Metal Arts
and Video.  Go to www.cca.edu for more information on the pre-college
program.

Training, education and internship opportunities in desktop publishing,
design, journalism, press operation and community organizing are being
offered FREE OF CHARGE to Berkeley High School students by Bay Area
Alternative Press. Bay Area Alternative Press is an all-volunteer
organization of artists, printers, designers as well as students and many
other people working to teach and learn publication skills to improve
conditions in our communities. To make an appointment to find out more about
the opportunities for training and internship, call Matt Marsh at

SUMMER INTERNSHIP IN MEDIA.  Possible internships include:  video production
projects with local organizations, video crew for professional film
companies, television production, curating the Mill Valley film festival,
and many more.  Interested students can pick up an application from Ms.
Rashiah in room G108B at Berkeley High School (9am-4:30 p.m.).

Tutoring - for incoming 9th grader in math (algebra/geometry) primarily.
BHS Latin a plus.  $10-15/hour.  Schedule flexible.  Potential for
