Congratulations to the BHS Men's Lightweight 8 Crew, the 5th fastest
lightweight 8 boat in the Nation!
Coxswain Mark Grossberg and seniors Hogan Edelberg, Aaron Goldman, Christin
Davis, Zack Mitchell, Jono Brandel, Brian Sweeney and sophomores Zander Bice
and James Barnett did BHS proud when they gave a thrilling race into second
place in the qualifying heat that advanced them to the Grand Finals @ the US
Rowing Youth Invitational in Cincinnati this past weekend. Not only was this
the first time in 7 years that a BHS lightweight 8 qualifed for the
Nationals (85 participating high school rowing teams from across the
Nation), but this year's team was the only public school to advance to the
finals. In the grand finals, the Bay area was well represented with BHS and
Marin, who took first place with a time of 6min 13.5sec. They battled
against 2 rowing clubs from Seattle - Everett and Mt. Baker, Cincinnati Jr.
RC and McCalle RC from Chattanooga. On an overcast day with strong
headwinds that pulled the starting boats to the right, BHS came from behind
maintaining third place around 1000 meters until about 700 meters before
being passed by Mt. Baker and Cincinnati. Mc Calle who started out at 46
strokes/minute petered out in last place. Strokes were flying as the
average stroke rate was about 40 strokes/minute! BHS finished with a time
of 6min 24.65sec. Way to go Jackets!
