At the board meeting on May 19, 2004 the Board discussed the following
items of interest to the Berkeley High School community:

1. Superintendent Lawrence encouraged everyone to
attend a community forum: Funding Excellence in
Public Schools, on Tuesday June 1st, 7:30 p.m. at
Longfellow Middle School. The forum with Michele
Lawrence and the Center for Research in Education
Financing (USC), director Lawrence Picus is
sponsored by the Berkeley Public Education
Foundation and others. Details are available for
review on the BUSD Web-site:
www.berkeley.k12.ca.us

2. The Board voted to approve at second reading,
Controversial Issues Policy BP 6144 and
Administrative Regulation AR 6144. Both drafts are
available for review at the Berkeley public libraries on
pages 89 – 93 of the Board Packet for May 19th, or on
the BUSD Web-site at: www.berkeley.k12.ca.us

3. The Board received a report on the results of a random
sample survey about the proposed new tax measure
that would generate additional tax revenue of $6.5
million to $8 million to restore or enhance programs
effected by the poor state economy. The survey was
conducted by Paul Goodwin, Survey Consultant for
GLS Research, who has conducted two previous
surveys for the BUSD. The recommendation, based
on the results of the survey, was to go ahead with a
Bridge Measure. The report concluded that confidence
levels were as high as in the previous survey in 2000,
and that an effective campaign would educate those
outside of the school community unaware of the
progress throughout the district.
More details will be available on the
BUSD Web-site at: www.berkeley.k12.ca.us

4. The Board received the monthly enrollment report
and average daily attendance summaries from
February 23rd to March 19th, 2004. Student
enrollment totaled 8,870, with 8.34% of monthly
absences, costing the BUSD $355,572 in projected
ADA.
