The Berkeley Special Education Parents Network (BSPED) is meeting Tuesday,
May 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ala Costa Center, 1300 Rose Street (at
Cedar/Rose Park). The topic is Transition.
Two presentations will focus on transition to adulthood for students with
special educational needs. An Individualized Transition Program (ITP) is a
requirement of IDEA beginning at age 16 (or 14 if appropriate) whereby
school districts liason with needed community support entities in order to
provide person-centered services and supports to successfully transition
from student to adult life.
The Transition Service Integration Project (TSIP) will serve BUSD
transition-age students through the 2004 - 2005 school year. The TSIP model
has been in place for seven years throughout CA, HI, TN and MD. Program
outcomes include seamless transition from school settings to adult service
providers in 100% community-based settings and an 85% employment rate upon
graduation. Discussion will include specific details about program
characteristics and implementation plans.
The Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) is a mentoring/training opportunity for
youth with disabilities, aged 14-22 which runs from 10/2004 - 3/2005.
Transition years are challenging for teens with disabilities and their
families. Fear exists regarding what the real options are for creating a
fulfilling life out in the community. YEP is designed to create a supportive
learning environment for youth and their families so they can make informed
decisions that balance "risk" and "choice." YEP contact: (510) 595-9253 or
