SAT WORD OF THE DAY: COMBUSTIBLE – flammable.  Gasoline is so highly 
combustible that smoking is never permitted at gas stations.

SENIORS
SENIOR AWARDS CELEBRATION:  Participate in the Awards Celebration to be 
held on Tuesday, May 25th at 7:00 p.m.  Forms will be distributed in 
all junior English classes.  Deadline:  May 11.

Reminder – May 1st is the deadline to return your Statement of Intent 
to Register for MOST colleges and universities.  When you mail it in, 
remember to get a Certificate of Mailing from the post office to prove 
that you met the deadline. As a courtesy to the other colleges where 
you were admitted, mail in the form indicating that you will not be 
attending their school in the fall.

JUNIORS AND SENIORS – Cal students will be in the College/Career Center 
on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch and after school, and Fridays at 
lunch, to talk with you about college options, financial aid and any 
other questions or concerns you may have.  Stop by!

UPCOMING EVENTS
TODAY - Tuesday, April 27, 10:35 – Representatives from Union College, 
Colgate College and Hobart and William Smith College will make a 
presentation about their schools and private colleges in general in 
D-221.  Sign up in D-221.

Saturday, May 1, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.  – East Bay College Fair at Cal 
State Hayward. Information including a list of colleges attending is 
available in the College/Career Center.

BIGGEST COLLEGE FAIR OF THE YEAR - Saturday, May 8, 1:00-4:30 p.m.  – 
East Bay College Connection Fair at St. Mary’s College.  Free shuttles 
from Orinda BART station to the fair. More information, including the 
list of colleges attending, is available at  www.stmarys-ca.edu/ebcc.  
Planning guides are available in the College/Career Center.  Over 140 
colleges will be attending.

Monday, May 10, 7:30 p.m. – Exploring College Options, Student/Parent 
Information Sessions with representatives from Duke, Georgetown, 
Harvard and Penn.  Westin St. Francis, 335 Powell Street, San 
Francisco.  415-397-7000.

Tuesday, May 12, 12:20 p.m  - A representative of Diablo Valley College 
will be in the College/Career Center to talk with you about the campus 
and signing up for classes.  Sign-up in advance in the College/Career 
Center.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Washington Mutual has a two year internship opportunity in the banking 
industry for a current sophomore student.  Applications and more 
information is available in the College/Career Center.  The position is 
open until filled, so get your application in as soon as possible.
 
TESTING - DEADLINES AND PREPARATION
THURSDAY - April 29 – Regular registration deadline for the June 5 SAT 
I and SAT II tests.
May 7 - Regular registration deadline for the June 12 ACT test.
I recommend that juniors take at least one of these tests if you are 
considering applying to a four year college or university.

SCHOLARSHIPS
A small sampling of the many scholarships available in the College 
Center.
Come by to get the complete list.

Gill Foundation Scholarship - $1,000 scholarship renewable for three 
subsequent years for seniors with a GPA of 2.5 or above with 
established financial need and academic potential.  Deadline:  May 3.  
Applications available in D-221.

Admark, The Bay Area Advertising & Marketing Association, is sponsoring 
up to four scholarships for students studying in the areas of 
advertising communications, design, journalism, marketing, and media.  
To be eligible, students must be a high school senior or have achieved 
at least a sophomore college level of studies and attend school in the 
San Francisco Bay Area.  Scholarship winners must promise to continue 
their studies in their chosen field for at least one additional school 
year.  For more information and an application, go to www.admark.org.  
On the homepage pull down menu where it says Quick Navigation, select 
Scholarships, then click Go.  Applications must be RECEIVED by May 4th.

Outstanding Chinese American Student Award.  For Chinese/Chinese 
American Seniors.  Applications available in D-221.  Deadline:  May 1.

Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc., Latina Scholarship Program. For female 
seniors of Latino heritage.  Applications available in D-221.  
Deadline:  May 1.

San Francisco State College of Business, P.Y. Wen Scholarship - 
California
resident with a minimum GPA of 3.25 with financial need who will be
entering the College of Business.  Applications available in D-221 or at
http://cob.sfsu.edu/cob/portal_student/scholarships.cfm. Deadline: 
September 30. 
 
Kiwanis Club of Berkeley - 2 scholarships.  For both scholarships, 
applicants must demonstrate academic ability, leadership, moral 
integrity and a commitment to serve their school and community.  
Whitehead – for seniors from high schools in the cities of Berkeley, 
Albany and El Cerrito.  1 scholarship for $10,000 and 5 scholarships 
for $2,000; Memorial Fund - for seniors from high schools in the city 
of Berkeley.  5 scholarships of $2,000.

California Labor Federation - $2,000 scholarships.  Essay required. 
Deadline:  May 1.  Pick up more information in D-221 or call (510) 
663-4000.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
*Syracuse University Summer College for High School Students – July 
4-August 14.  Classes in architecture, law, liberal arts, engineering 
and computer science, fashion and textile design and many more.  
Regular application deadline is May 30.  Applications available in 
D-221.

Youth Leaders Action Camp – Two ten day session – August 1-11, and 
12-22.  Grades 9-12.  Develop leadership skills, learn job skills 
through natural building, learn people skills through drama and camp 
out on a biodynamic farm.  For more information, call 510-290-6444 or

University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television.  
Includes filmmaking, computer graphics, entertainment industry, 
screenwriting, film studies.  Rolling admissions, deadline June 23.

Boston College Summer Experience Program.  Open to students who have 
completed their junior year.  Classes are offered in a wide variety of 
subjects.  Applications available in D-221.

Summer of Art at Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles.

UC Santa Barbara Summer Sessions for High School Students - Early Start 
and Research Mentorship Programs available.  Applications available in
